Garden Suites are similar to laneway suites in that they are secondary detached residential units, sharing the same lot as an existing main house. The major difference is that garden suites are on lots that do not abut a publicly designated lane. Drawing from our experience in developing the laneway suites by-laws, we will discuss the steps, opportunities and challenges to bringing this exciting typology to our city. We will share our experiences with the Laneway Suite policy and how garden suites can further our mandate to responsibly densify low-rise residential neighbourhoods, unlocking the true potential of Toronto’s urban fabric.
